Studio 3DX demonstrates what is possible when complexity is handled correctly. The next step is a decision — one our clients have already made.

As more brands move towards 3D configurators, certain limitations continue to surface.
Many solutions rely on simplified visuals, pre-rendered images, or incomplete 3D models. Others struggle to balance quality with performance, or operate as standalone tools without meaningful connection to sales processes. In some cases, even the 3D assets themselves remain exposed and unprotected. These challenges often go unnoticed at first but they directly impact how effective a configurator truly is.
One of the most common barriers sits earlier in the process: the availability of suitable 3D models. For many manufacturers, especially those with extensive product ranges, ready-to-use assets for real-time applications simply do not exist. This can delay projects, limit scope, or prevent companies from moving forward altogether.
Topline’s Approach
With Topline RIBs, the process started from the physical boats. Working with Studio 3DX, the focus shifted from dependency on existing assets to a direct digitisation approach. Using specialised 3D scanning equipment, each boat was captured and translated into a structured digital model, then refined and optimised for real-time performance. This allowed the entire model range to be brought into a consistent system.

The result is a configurator designed for real use. Users can explore a wide range of options, from colour combinations and upholstery textures to engines, covers, and onboard equipment. Electrical systems and electronics are also integrated into the experience, allowing configurations to reflect how the boats are actually specified. Every change is visualised instantly, and each configuration can be saved, shared, and revisited, creating a clear path from exploration to enquiry.
The configurator is designed to perform reliably across all devices, without reducing visual quality. Materials respond naturally, environments remain fluid, and interactions feel immediate whether on desktop, tablet, or mobile. Behind the interface, configuration rules ensure that every selection is valid. What users see is always aligned with what can actually be built.

The 3D models are handled within a protected environment, preventing direct access or reuse, an often overlooked aspect in many web-based solutions. At the same time, the configurator connects directly to a broader system. Enquiries and configuration data are all captured and organised, supporting follow-up and decision-making without relying on external tools.
This process highlights an important distinction. A configurator can function as a visual tool, or it can operate as a reliable extension of the product. In Topline’s case, the investment in scanning and structured modelling enables the latter. The configurator reflects not only how the boats look, but how they are defined.
Approaches to 3D configurators vary widely across the industry. Some remain focused on visual presentation, others are limited in scope, and many face challenges when scaling to full product ranges. While the limitations above are not universal, they are common enough to shape the experience many companies have when adopting 3D configurators.

What defines a more capable solution is not just the visual outcome, but the entire pipeline behind it, from how products are digitised, to how they are configured, delivered, and integrated into the wider business.
